To obtain BIS certification or BIS registration in India, all foreign manufacturers must appoint a BIS Authorized Indian Rep (AIR). Domestic manufacturers can apply to BIS directly online via the BIS Login Portal without appointing an Authorized Indian Rep (AIR). The AIR is responsible for ensuring that the Indian BIS Act and Rules, Regulations, Terms & Condition are adhered to.

Nomination of AIR may vary according to the following:

The AIR will appear if the manufacturer is a branch or liaison office located in India.

If the manufacturer does not have a liaison office/branch office in India, but the proprietor/registered user of the brand/trademark appearing on the object is located in India, the proprietor/registered user will become AIR.

If the manufacturer has a liaison office in India and there is no proprietor/registered user of the brand/trademark appearing in the article in India, the other organization will be designated as the AIR.
